The purpose of this study was to analyze how often and why school bullying happens in elementary, middle, and high schools in Korea.
The study sought to analyze: a) the state of school bullying; b) the characteristics of the victim and the bully; c) the dynamic process and structural characteristics of school bullying; and d) teacher's and parents' perceptions of and attitudes towards school bullying. After reviewing these issue, the study presents some solutions for combating school bullying.
Overall, school bullying displayed certain structural characteristics.
First, as developmental psychologists argue, school bullying often involves a form of scapegoat, whereby the victim serves as an outlet for the bully's (or peer group's) sense of failure and self-identity conflict. Second, overdistinguished egos, on the part of others, could result in bullying behavior.
Third, because school bullying usually happens implicitly, it is not easily recognized. Fourth, our society has a standard of behavior based on the group rather than the individual. For those who grew up in this society, accepting different or unfamiliar behaviors and attitudes can be difficult.
On the basis of these findings, the study suggested the following categories of solutions:
·Improving the recognition of schooling bullying;
·reviewing the structure generating school bullying;
·quick response to school bullying;
·solutions for suicide; and
·solutions for preventing school bullying.
