Southern Drama: Its Past and Present
The study on the regional literature starts with the several burdens to carry on: how to define it, how to generalize it and how to approach it, etc.. Let us define southern drama simply as drama written by the playwrights from the South and dealing with the South. The origin of southern drama is the same as that of American Drama. Virginia where America begins is the homeland of American Drama as well. In the 17th and 18th centuries, southern drama centers around Charleston and New Orleans and it barely reveals its unique characteristics distinguished from so called northern drama. The uniqueness of southern drama starts from the South's conflict with the North upon the issue of slavery. The Civil War gives southern drama the greatest momentum to identify itself: the advocation of slavery, the appreciation of the glorious past and the introduction of some stereotypical characters such as strong women. But after the Civil War, the literary climate in the South completely changes. The literary people as well as the historians start to review the southern history. Paul Green is the leader of the folk drama of the 1920s rereading the southern past. His tragedy, In Abraham's Bosom dramatizes the education of the black people and the society's unfair treatment toward mulattos. His another tragedy, The House of Connerlly, deals with the conflict between the Old South, the decaying aristocracy and the New South, the spirited labor class. Lillian Hellman brings southern drama to the center stage of Broadway. Her plays about the Hubbard family, The Little Foxes and Another Part of the Forest, explore the ways in which the corrupted old south produces the more wicked new South. Tennessee Williams is the most renowned playwrights from the South. His The Glass Menagerie and The Streetcar Named Desire centers around the two strong women conflicting between the industrial present and the glorious, old South. In the late 20th century, the southern regional theater movement pursues very actively the southern identity, language and history. The Southerness of southern drama can be found in the works embracing the South--its glory as well as its ugliness--and reproducing it in a productive manner.
