Leadership and Managerial Success
: Comparison of Male & Female Managers
Hye-Ryun Kang
ABSTRACT
This study aims to compare male and female leadership and to identify the relationship between leader behavior and managerial success. Leadership behavior was measured in terms of two dimensions : initiating of structure and consideration. Promotion Index(PI) was developed for the measure of managerial success. The sample for this study consisted of 890 managers from 12 companies in Korea.
Research findings can be summarized as follows : Firstly, male managers scored higher than females on initiating structure but the higher the level of women managers, the higher the score of initiating structure. Secondly, the difference of PI between male and female was significant but it was disappeared on professional jobs. Thirdly, initiating structure influenced PI of both managers significantly but negatively, which had stronger effect for the higher level of women managers. Finally, the study discussed managerial implications and limitations of the research and suggested several directions for future research.
