“Scared and frozen,” Sylvia Plath describes herself in her journal, and as the critics say, she chose to run away from fear of life by committing a suicide . Born to die, Sylvia Plath writes many poems which describe her desire for death, and “Ariel” shows such state of mind. Even though it seems like a poem of joy and praise for a horse, “Ariel” actually shows the image of death in a profound sense, with diverse meanings of the title, uses of sounds of ‘S~’ and ‘L~,’ and metaphorical construction.
