Understanding the progressive nature of MS and the characteristics of stress and fatigue on the body.
MS symptoms may occur episodically or may progress continuously. Symptoms are dependent on the location of the area of scarring and therefore no two cases of MS are exactly alike. Episodes of symptoms are often referred to as relapses, attacks or exacerbations (Holland et al 1996, Schapiro 1998, Kalb 2000 and Finlayson 2003)
MS can be classified into four (4) common types: (Hawkins et al 2000 and Kalb 2000).
Relapsing- Remitting - characterised by clearly defined acute attacks with full recovery or with some neurologic signs/ symptoms remaining upon recovery. The periods between disease relapses are characterised by a lack of disease progression. This is the most common type of MS at the time of diagnosis.
Primary Progressive - the disease shows progression of disability from initial onset, without plateaus, remissions or with only occasional plateau and temporary minor improvements.
Secondary Progressive – disease begins with initial relapsing – remitting course. Progression follows at a variable rate. May also include occasional relapses and minor remissions
Progressive – Relapsing - pattern of MS shows a clear progression from onset, but with clear, acute relapses that may or may not have some recovery following the acute episode.
Fatigue and stress are symptoms experienced by MS sufferers. Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms of MS, occurring in about 80% of people (NMSS 2004). The characteristics of MS fatigue differ to that of a person without MS.
MS fatigue:
Generally occurs on a daily basis
May occur early in the morning, even after a restful night's sleep
Tends to worsen as the day progresses
Tends to be aggravated by heat and humidity
Comes on more easily and suddenly
Is generally more severe than normal fatigue
Is more likely to interfere with daily responsibilities
