모래놀이작품의 해석은 놀이감 한 개씩의 의미 부여나 하나의 작품만 갖고 해석하는 것은 올바르지 못하다. 계속되는 과정을 총체적으로 이해할 때 보다 잘 이해할 수 있기 때문이다.
모래놀이 치료는 모래와 작은 모형들을 매개체로 아동의 무의식과 의식을 연결지으므로 치료가 이루어지는 과정이다. 이 기법은 언어가 별로 필요하지 않을 뿐 아니라 그림을 이용한 기법보다 아동의 심리적 부담을 줄일 수 있고 자기를 자유롭게 표현할 수 있다. 또한 그림이 이차원적이라면 모래놀이는 삼차원적으로 표현할 수 있다. 다른 기법에 비해 강한 충돌표출이 가능하고 작품의 기록이 쉽다는 장점이 있다.
