1. Who was Emerson?

 ▪ Born on May 25 1803 in Boston, Massachusetts, Emerson experienced a period of deaths concerning family members and loved ones.

 ▪ First, his household minister died right when he hit the age of eight. Earlier, though, his father died, leaving him to become very close to his mother, siblings, and Aunt Mary Moody, who had a great influence on him.




1. Who was Emerson?

 ▪ Emerson studied at Harvard College where he graduated in 1821. During his time at Harvard, Emerson produced many great works, including “Thoughts on the Religion of the Middle Ages”, which was actually his first work published in 1822.

 ▪ After visiting many countries, Emerson was inspired to write his first book titled Nature which included many of his most famous essays.

 ▪ While being out in New England, Emerson caught a cold which turned into pneumonia and was the cause of his death at the age of seventy eight.




2. Transcendentalism

 ▪ A philosophical movement that was developed in the 30’s in the Eastern region of the U.S.

 ▪ Their core beliefs was the inherent goodness of both people and nature.

 ▪ The publication of Emerson’s essay, ‘Nature’ is considered the watershed moment at which transcendentalism became a major cultural movement.
