Hypertextual Narrative of Postmodernist Fiction:
Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s Slaughterhouse-Five
Abstract Inchan Pak (Sookmyung Women's University)
Since the first hypertext fiction, Michael Joyce's Afternoon, a Story, came out in 1987, hypertext literature has been gradually established as a new narrative mode of the new media age that film and computer have led. As it is well known, hypertext basically refers to a form of electronic text composed of blocks of text and the electronic links that join them, and hypertext fiction is a computer-based narrative mode in which those hypertextual links are actively and creatively applied to storytelling. But the major characteristics of hypertext fiction, as this paper argues, are not radically new at all. While it is true that a new information technology gave birth to computer hypertext, its major tenets and features fundamentally derived from the literary experiments of postmodern novelists who continued to explore the new possibilities of the novel against 'the death of the novel.' In this sense, the postmodern novelists might be called early hypertext novelists who had variously experimented hypertextual narrative with the printed books before computers were commonly used. And it might be said as well that computer hypertext fiction is a recent achievement that an encounter of postmodernist fiction and computer technology has brought and, at the same time, a continuation of postmodernist fiction.
This paper intends to explore a relationship between postmodernist fiction and hypertext fiction. After a brief introduction of hypertext fiction, it examines the hypertexuality of postmodernist fiction in Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s Slaughterhouse-Five. In addition to discussing the major characteristics of hypertextual narrative in Vonnegut's novel, this paper goes further to imagine a form that the novel might take if it were reconstructed into computer hypertext fiction and compare the computer version with the original printed novel.
