단순히 벗어나고 초월해야 할 굴레로서의 장애물이 아닌, 한 개인의 자아정체성을 바람직하게 이끌고 그 사회의 문화에 융화될 수 있는 성인으로 이끌기 위해서는 어떻게 해야 하는지 끊임없이 고민하는 자세가 우리 모두에게 필요할 때이다.

Abstract
This paper is to search the socialization institutes' influences on the main characters of W. Sommerset Maugham's Of Human Bondage and James Joyce's A Portrait of an Artist as Young Man during the period of their youth, especially of their teenage. These two novels were published when England and Ireland went through a rapid changing time and the main characters' process of development and socialization seems like similar in some ways while totally different partly. I compared the aspects of the growth process of the two protagonists and their surroundings like their family, school and the society.
The protagonists tried to escape from 'the bondage' which prohibit them from being a free and distinctive man. In Of Human Bondage, the main character Philip born to a lame person and has defense mechanism. He is a man of sensitive but quite ordinary like everyone else. On the other hand, the protagonist of A Portrait of an Artist as Young Man, Stephen, has artistic character with high self-consciousness. Just like their personality, their suffer to become an adult also different.
Most of the teenagers do not want to be like others. They tried to become more unique and special than others. But their struggle of being special reflects the real aspects of the society. This article traces the protagonists struggles while examining the circumstances around them.
