The scene begins in the parlor. Norman is standing in front of a desk where a guest book is placed. It is a medium shot. Then he walks up to the desk. Norman is lit by side lighting from the left (from the viewer’s view) that creates many shadows on his face. It makes Norman seem as if he has a divided personality. After he looks at the guest book, he goes into the room and closes the door. Those two shots are match on action editing which is normally used for when a person comes in and out of a place to maintain the story. The room is in low-key lighting that creates a mysterious scene. As the scene becomes mysterious, the director matches visual and auditory rhythms to each other. The tempo of the music is a little bit faster than heart beat. A bird is one of the props that show the narrative of Psycho. A crane is a bird of prey, and Marion Crane begins by steeling money from the rich man. She becomes a victim of a murder later. She is the prey of Norman. At the same time, Norman himself is prey, or victim, of his mother.
