Michel Foucault’s Discourse and Subjectivity in Ragged Dick
Horatio Alger, Jr.’s Ragged Dick encourages poor youth to work assiduously to achieve
success in their life. It was purposely created to convey the information that only morally and
ethically working hard youth of the poor and young city boys can succeed. In the novel, through
Frank and Mr.Whitney, Dick chooses to pursue a goal that would allow him to succeed in the future.
Foucault’s theories of subjectivity and discourse help readers to understand Dick’s changes
throughout the novel. The discourse of “successful men” affects Dick to change his mind about
what he should pursue and the subjectivity formed through the reflection of social values causes
him to create his own identity.
