eom(想念, Thoughts). Chin-Yeo and Sang-Yeom are two aspects of the Mind, which are opposite to each other in character. Second, two 'movements' are possible in the Mind, one from Chin-Yeo〔Reality〕to Sang-Yeom〔Pheonomenon〕, another from Sang-Yeom to Chin-Yeo. But only the latter can lead a man to the wisdom. And the movement from Sang-Yeom to Chin-Yeo can occur only when both the Mode of Chin-Yeo(眞如自體相, Manifestation of the Essence of Suchness) and the Function of Chin-Yeo(眞如用, Influences) are fulfilled. If any of the two is not fulfilled, this movement is impossible. The two are necessary conditions of this movement to occur.
Such an explanation of the Mind apparently seems to have no relation with the way in which wisdom is practically attained. According to the Discourse, the only way to attain the wisdom is to imitate the achievements of the Enlightened One. The way in which the explanation of the Mind and the prescription of learning are related to each other is rather conceptual than empirical. In other words, to distinguish the Mode and the Function of Chin-Yeo is a conceptual matter, not empirical one. The two, the Mode and Function of Chin-Yeo, can be defined as two different but not separable aspects of the life of the Enlightened One.
The statement that the Enlightened One is the embodiment of Chin-Yeo means that Chin-Yeo becomes known through the life of the Enlightened One. Therefore, the endeavor to attain Chin-Yeo is not different from the endeavor to imitate the life of the Enlightened One. Except imitating the life of the Enlightened One, there is no way to attain Chin-Yeo. In short, the Enlightened One is the necessary condition in the endeavor for wisdom.
Our everyday life is the life of the secular concerns. Insofar as the school subjects are the accumulation of the secular concerns, they do not require anything like the 'detached' place and the 'special' human beings called 'teacher'. The school subjects, composed of human intellectual inheritances are not concerned about secular matters. It is the 'core' of civilization accumulated through the history. Therefore, to teach them can be carried out soundly by the man who lives the special life different from the common people, and in the place detached from the everyday affairs. The man who lives the special life is the 'teacher', and the detached place is the 'school'.
The teacher is not a man who shows what the life for the secular concerns is. He is the man who shows what the life, beyond the secular concerns is. In other words, he shows the meaning of the school subjects through his life. As the Enlightened One is Chin-Yeo, the life of a teacher is the school subject. A teacher occupies such a key position in education.
