2. An American Tragedy
1) Clyde와 American Dream
Dreiser의 대표작으로 인정되는 An American Tragedy를 통해 구현된 주인공 Clyde Griffiths는 전형적인 미국의 비극상을 그린 인물이었다. 이 작품을 통해 Dreiser는 미국인들이 꿈꾸는 물질적인 성공인 American Dream에 맹목적으로 빠져 드는 미국인들의 가치관에 대해 문제를 제기하고 한 미국인의 비극을 통해 올바른 정신적 가치관과 인생을 보다 진지하게 살아 갈 필요성을 강조하고 있다.
Dreiser가 묘사하는 인간상은 American dilemma의 한 표본이 되고 있다. 어떤 의미에서 Clyde가 겪은 정신적, 육체적 번민과 고민은 현대 미국인의 고민이고 그가 걷는 파멸의 길은 미국적인 비극상 이라 하겠다.
미국의 한 비극적 희생자를 깊이 관찰한 이 작품은 3부로 나누어 볼 수가 있다. 1부에서는 가두설교를 하는 선교단 가족의 장남인 Clyde는 모든 것을 종교에서 구하는 가난한 광신적 가정을 떠나 소위 American Dream을 위해 부와 환락의 도시로 나와 drug store의 소다 판매원으로 일하다가 호텔의 bell-boy로 취직한다. 호텔에서 Clyde는 동료들과 어울려 경이로운 부의 세계를 경험하며 환락을
