The Desire for the forbidden things
The Pandora had the box that shouldn’t be opened. The Bluebeard had a small locked room on the lower floor. But at last, the Pandora and the bluebeard’s wife couldn’t resist the curiosity, and opened the forbidden thing. Many stories that we already know start from this kind of situation. Something is forbidden to the main character. The things or behaviors which are forbidden are what we call the taboo. The term ‘taboo’ is from Polynesian languages. The form taboo is from Tongan tabu. It is first found on James’ Cook’s journal “A voyage to the Pacific ocean”. Cook described this word "has a very comprehensive meaning; but, in general, signifies that a thing is forbidden.... When anything is forbidden to be eat, or made use of, they say, that it is taboo." Besides this, we can find many other definitions of taboo defined by different philosophers. In “Totem and Taboo”, Freud described this term as mixture of unclean, dangerous, and fear. According to the Oxford English dictionary, taboo is ‘The putting of a person or thing under prohibition or interdict, perpetual or temporary”.
