Name the ten most important things foreigners should know about 5-18-1980.
1. This event was not an insurrection but a democratization movement. Like other movements in middle-east of Asia in which citizens are seeking for their democratic freedom from dictators, this event was a democratization movement. In 1980, Chun doo-hwan who had been controlling the whole of country was so cruel that people could not be anymore spectators of administration's tyranny, so that citizens of Gwangju invoked and fought for the democracy.
2. There were no crimes while the movement was happening. Unlike the other movements happened all around of the world, citizens who were living in Gwangju at that time did not commit any crime, even a surviving crime. The group of civilian militias helped to maintain public order and the citizens of Gwangju helped the civilian militias as they donated blood for wounded people.
3. Not only had the civilian militias fought for the army, but also the citizens’ settlement committee and the students’ settlement committee joined the democratization movement. There were ministers, taxi drivers, professors and high school students. Even though, there were many teenagers participating on that, the army did not care and killed them indiscriminatingly.
