Coinage : creating words outright in order to fit some purpose

case 1 – advertising industry
ex) Kodak, nylon, Orlon, Dacron etc.
specific brand names are used as the generic name
ex) Xerox, Kleenex, Jell-O, Brillo, Vaseline
some were created from existing words
ex) Kleenex, Jell-O

case 2 – computer speech processing
ex) spectrum → cepstrum , spectral → cepstral

case 3 – Greek roots
Thermos “hot” + metron “measure” → thermometer
akros “topmost” + phobia “fear” → acrophobia

case 4 – cartoonist, Robert Osborn
