Following the Trend of Communication Theories:
Communication That Frames Our Society

Studying communication theories, the broadness and diversity in the field of Communications were revealed, along with over 120 definitions of communication. Since the field of communication is very obscure with complicated concepts and theories that may or may not apply to people, each person takes perspectives of communication that works best for individuals. Looking at communication theories as the maps of how communication works, according to Griffin (2006), there are seven traditions in the field of communication theory, including rhetorical, semiotic, cybernetic, phenomenological, socio-psychological, socio-cultural, and critical traditions.

People generally do not assume that one’s communication traditions in daily life can influence the whole society and affect others who live in the same society. With the understanding of communication theories, however, people will know an individual is connected to shaping cultural and social framework of the entire society, and I personally felt more responsibilities with my words when communicating with others.
