ABLE
1) 무엇을 할 수 있고 실제 행하는 것이 놀랄 만한 것이 아닐 때는 be able to를 쓰고 일반적으로 행하는 것은 아니지만 원하면 할 수 있을 때는 be capable of를 쓴다.

One man is capable of destroying the whole world.

The doctor said that after a few days I`d be able to get out of bed.
Will you be able to play on Saturday?
I am sure he`s quite capable of getting here on time, but he can`t be bothered.
The power station is capable of generating enough electricity for the whole region.

2) see, hear, smell과 같은 감각을 나타내는 동사나 understand, decide, remember과 같은 마음을 나타내는 동사의 경우는 be able to 보다는 can이나 can`t를 쓴다.

There are so many places to visit in London that I`m not able to decide where to go.(*)
There are so many places to visit in London that I can`t decide where to go.

I can`t hear you. Could you speak a bit louder, please?
I think I can smell something burning.
Having met her new boss, I can see why she doesn`t like him.

3) `-하는 것을 멈출 수 없다`의 `can`t stop -ing`의 경우는 be able to 로 바꾸어 쓸 수 없다.

We weren`t able to stop laughing.(*)
We couldn`t stop laughing.
The book was so fascinating I couldn`t stop reading it.

4) 법이나 규칙(law, rules) 등으로 규제되는 행동은 can이나 can`t 혹은 be allowed to를 쓴다. be able to를 쓰지 않는다.

In some countries you are not able to drink until you are 21. (*)
In some countries you can`t drink until you are 21.

Now that they are both sixteen, they can get married.
The goalkeeper can touch the ball, but nobody else can.

5) `누구에게 무엇을 가능하게 하다`라는 뜻을 만들기 위해서는 `make + 목적어 + able to`를 쓰기보다는 `enable + 목적어 + to부정사`를 쓴다.

Technology has made them able to grow their own food.(*)
Technology has enabled them to grow their own food.
