Though it didn't appear seemingly, Hester wore the same clothes as his clothes, so she dispensed charity to people like 'Angel' without desiring result for 7 years. The third factor is strong maternal affection about Pearl. It also becomes strong force that can overcome suffering. Thanks to such motivations, she served people by perseverance and modesty and finally became 'A Sister of Mercy' with trust and respect from people. Also, the symbol of the scarlet letter changed into 'Able'. The reason that Hester didn't leave there and her motivations were caused by personal emotion all. Consequently, I think she can overcome suffering because she is faithful in free and personal emotion. Furthermore, her humanity can abreact people who kept in discipline produced by oneself despite looking for new freedom.
