2. Social situations in America (1920s)
American dream means American equality and social success whoever can make in America society. However because of ‘the wave of Industrial Revolution’ and ‘American Civil War’, American dream became more and more collapsed. In ‘The Great Gatsby’ by F. Scott fitzerald, it showed doubtful prospect about bright future as well as the narrow confrontation between materialism and idealism in America. It was showed in the novel’s regional background called as ‘West Egg’ and ‘East Egg’, which symbolized American east and west area. D.S. Savage said “The Great Gatsby is a parable of innocence and experience” .
