본문내용
The first environmental background is regarding the external environmental factors. One of the factors which can heavily influence Zootopia is demographic condition, an external environmental factor. The setting of the movie is a city Zootopia, which is promoted to be a utopia-like city where all different types of animals can live in harmony with full satisfaction. Demographic conditions is about "characteristics of the population such as age, gender, race, religion, and ethnic categories" (Rainey 2014, p.88). This condition is strong in Zootopia because the city consists population of all kinds animal species. The diversity is the main strength and characteristic that the city mostly appeal as an utopian city. However, social customs about the different animal species remain contrary which regards the next external environmental factor shown in the movie, a cultural condition. A cultural condition include society's "predominant values, attitudes, beliefs, social customs, and socialization processes" (Rainey 2014, p.88). The city tries to appeal itself to be a perfect place to live in harmony regardless of their species. It shows its effort to create such image by providing 12 ecosystems suitable for all animals, buildings and transportation in various sizes, and inducing citizens to be respective. However, reality does not perfectly reflect such efforts. Citizens have strong generalizations about other species and differentiate themselves. They also have stereotypes about which species to behave in what specific way. Such cultural condition is evidently represented in the Zootopia Police Department. Before Judy first became part of the police department, all police officers were animals of strong and big species. Chief Bogo as an ox, officers as rhinos, tigers, lions, elephants, bears, hippos, and wolves. Not only in the police department, but stereotypes also existed out in the city's daily lives. The strongest shown in the movie was the stereotyping of foxes. Foxes were believed to be untrustworthy, backstabbing, and shirky. It's an irony conveyed that Zootopia is a city involving all species but species themselves do not welcome and respect each other.
