더 친절했고, 심지어 간수들의 소소한 부탁을 들어주는 간수도 있었다고 죄수들이 밝히고 있었다. Zimbardo는 이러한 결과에 대한 어떠한 설명도 하지 않았고, 설명하려는 시도조차 하지 않았다.
마지막으로 표본 집단이 지나치게 작다는 점이다. 고작 24명의 실험참가자들로 매우 짧은 기간 동안 실험을 한 것이라는 지적이다. 그리고 거기에 더해서 모든 24명의 참가들이 한 집단에서 서로 밀접한 관련을 한 상태에서는 표본 집단의 크기가 사실상 ‘1’이라고 봐도 무방하다는 주장이다.
University of Exeter and St Andrews University의 교수인 Haslam과 Reicher(2003)는 BBC의 도움을 받아 모방 실험을 부분적으로 실시했는데, 실험의 전 과정이 “The Experiment"라는 이름으로 TV를 통해서 방영되었다. 그들이 얻은 결과와 결론은 Zimbardo의 실험과는 매우 달랐다. 비록, 실험 과정이 Zimbardo의 그것과 정확히 동일한 것은 아니었지만, 이들의 결과는 Zimbardo의 실험 결과를 그대로 일반화 시킬 수 있는가에 대한 의문을 던져주기에 충분하다.38)
